National Tree Day

“Do like the trees: they change their leaves and keep their roots. So change your ideas and keep your principles.”

National Tree Day is celebrated in all parts of Italy on 21 November, established as a national anniversary. Its purpose is to promote environmental protection, the reduction of pollution and the enhancement of trees.

Trees appeared on Earth about 300 million years ago. By analyzing them, they offer us incredible information on the history and climate change of our planet.

The longest-lived tree in the world is 5066 years old Great Basin Bristlecone Pine is located in the White Mountains, California, USA and belongs to the species of Pinus Longaeva.

On the Italian territory the oldest one is found in Sardinia and is between 3 and 4 thousand years old and belongs to the species of Olea Europaea.

Trees also offer us some curiosities such as the “crown shyness” the phenomenon whereby individual tree crowns avoid overlap or touch . There are many hypotheses about it and its value suggesting that this phenomenon prevents the spread of leaf-eating insects.

The true value of trees, their indispensability, lies in their fundamental functions for our entire ecosystem and for life itself; they influence the microclimate by improving air quality, they protect us from noise, they have the ability to purify water. In addition to producing oxygen, trees produce food for living beings and shelter a large variety of animal species.

For all these reasons it is important to raise awareness on issues concerning the protection and reforestation which in all regions is transforming into initiatives dedicated to celebrating the occasion of the National Day of Trees with the aim of enhancing the importance of the Italian arboreal heritage.
